Eating Out in RC: Kamome Japanese Bistro

Kamome Japanese Bistro
5288 Joyce Street
Vancouver, BC

Kamome1Unlike most Japanese restaurants in Vancouver these days (which at last count was over 600), Kamome is not your run-of-the-mill, Chinese-run, sushi restaurant. No. Owner/chef Mika Walker is of true Japanese origin, from Osaka, and – surprise – you won’t even find sushi at Kamome. What? No sushi? What else is there you may be asking. If this is you, then I especially urge you to visit Kamome and find out.

As a Canadian who had the unique pleasure of living in Japan for 18 months, I can tell you that Kamome is the real deal. This is where the Japanese will be going to get their fix of food like mama used to make. And for the rest of us – we, too, can thank our lucky stars that we live in such a multi-ethnic metropolis as Renfrew-Collingwood, where we can find the real deals from all over the world on our doorstep.

The Kamome menu offers a wide selection of seafood, meat and vegetable onigiri that ranges from $2.50-$3.50 each. Onigiri is a Japanese fast food that is a rice ball wrapped in seaweed with various ingredients in the middle.

There is also a wide variety of donburi, which is a Japanese rice bowl dish with various toppings and sauces. Chicken Teri Don ( chicken with teriyaki sauce), Unagi Don (fresh water eel with teriyaki sauce), Ikura Don (salted salmon roe), Ebi Ten Don (Prawn tempura with tempura sauce) are a few of the choices ranging from $4-$6 for a small and $7-$12 for the larger bowls.

Kamome2Next, it is my pleasure to tell you of Mika’s very own creation – the Ja-panini. This is Kamome’s original grilled rice sandwich that comes in many delicious varieties like chicken, beef, prawn, salmon or unagi (fresh-water eel) with various vegetables and sauces. These carefully crafted combinations are wrapped with rice and seaweed and then grilled with a panini press.

I can tell you first hand that the Smoked Salmon Ja-panini is killer! The salmon along with asparagus, red pepper, lettuce and cream cheese was the perfect combination. Although the inspiration is clearly Japanese, I am sure that you will agree that the Salmon Ja-panini screams “west-coast classic.” Way to go Mika – your Ja-panini invention is an important culinary discovery and I look forward to trying them all.

Another specialty of Kamome, and even better than sushi, are the Rice Canapés (pictured below). Wikipedia tells us that a canapé is a type of hors d’œuvre – a small, prepared and usually decorative food, held in the fingers and often eaten in one bite. You can sample the five varieties of rice canapé for $12, or you can order an entire party tray of 25 rice canapés for $50.

Also at Kamome are side dishes like Hiya Yakko (cold tofu); Edamame (boiled green soybeans); Ikura Oroshi (salmon roe and radish) and potato soup.

For dessert, try the red bean muffin and green tea ice cream. I have been hearing good things about the ice cream shakes that come in vanilla, green tea and azuki (red bean) $5.

Kamome Japanese Bistro is Mika’s first restaurant. Kamome means “seagull” in Japanese and Mika named it that as “it is like summer, warm and cozy.” Well, I never had connected seagulls with warm and cozy before, but having been to Mika’s restaurant, Kamome, I believe it is the perfect name. Go taste the fresh, homemade goodness for yourself and say hello to Mika for me. Bon appetit.

Eating Out in RC – Freshii

Go try the Spicy Thai burrito at Freshii and find out why this new healthy fast food chain is sweeping the planet.

Go try the Spicy Thai burrito at Freshii and find out why this new healthy fast food chain is sweeping the planet.

Do you know about Freshii? This healthy fast food phenomenon started in Toronto by a young Canadian entrepreneur, Matthew Corrin, Freshii is growing by two to three stores per week and now has over 250 stores worldwide. Including, now, Renfrew-Collingwood.

Yay! This new location is located just north of the Renfrew Skytrain station, in the Broadway Tech Park at Renfrew and Virtual Way. Our Freshii was just opened in July by Rani Mannan and her husband, Mike. Experienced restaurateurs and franchise owners, this dynamic duo are preparing to open a second Freshii location at Station Square in Metrotown.

So what makes Freshii so special? How about a Buddha Satay with rice noodles, crispy wontons, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, green onions, peanut sauce Spicy Lemongrass soup with spicy lemongrass broth, rice noodles, tomatoes, cabbage, carrots, mushrooms, cilantro. Or a Metaboost salad with field greens and spinach, kale, mangoes, carrots, edamame,  almonds, goat cheese, balsamic vinaigrette.

Yes, this is healthy food. To all of these, you can add tofu, chicken, steak or turkey. Also on the menu are burritos, juices and smoothies, frozen yogurt and chili.

I tried out the Spicy Thai burrito. This included quinoa, cabbage, carrots, cilantro, edamame and spicy lemongrass sauce – to which I added chicken. I also ordered a bottle of juice and some pita chips. Within just a few minutes, my burrito was ready, along with a couple of sauces: sriracha and ranch.

This burrito, no lie, was probably the best wrap that I have ever tried – and I’ve tried a lot. So delicious, and so packed full of fresh delcious flavours – Freshii definitely is a good name for this type of food. Perfect for that business person or teacher or student who wants something to eat on the run, but something healthy.

Yes! Healthy food, I thought, as I gorged on my nutritious burrito, can taste awesome.

Go taste for yourself why Freshii is sweeping the nation. They also do catering. Maybe your boss will spring for the famous catering box filled with popular chef-designed wraps and burritos with tofu or chicken; kale, quinoa, steak or gourmet tuna.

Bon appetit.

Linguine ai Gamberoni

Linguine ai Gamberoni

Greetings food fans. We travel this time to the heart of RC’s Little Italy—the Italian Cultural Centre—to what is surely the finest Italian restaurant in this community, if not the city, La Piazza Dario Ristorante Italiano.

We’ve talked in the past about how one can travel the culinary world right here in RC, our cosmopolitan community. What’s awesome about La Piazza Dario is that the second you enter the beautifully landscaped courtyard, you are transported back to the old country.

Passing through the gated archway entrance, you realize there is a patio area built into the restaurant. Protected from the elements, yet open to the fresh air, it’s the perfect little oasis. The rest of the dining room is tastefully decorated with the most beautiful paintings, statues, vases, plants and flowers. It is amidst this beauty that La Piazza Dario invites us to slow down, relax, smell the flowers, and get ready to “experience that particular Italian gift of making an art out of life.”

For over three decades, under the knowledgeable eye of head chef Claudio Ranallo, La Piazza Dario has been producing Italian cuisine of the highest standards. Starting with traditional Italian recipes, Chef Ranallo has created a menu that is authentic yet innovative.

“Exceptional cuisine is life-enhancing magic that should be enjoyed around a table with family and friends.” That is precisely what my accomplice and I accomplished there for lunch on this occasion.

For an appetizer, we chose the Prosciutto di Parma (thinly sliced and served with olives, $13). So good! In addition, I tried the Linguine ai Gamberoni (prawns sautéed in a white wine and garlic sauce, $17). The linguine was perfectly cooked. My accomplice went with the Pollo al Gorgonzola (free-range chicken breast in a delicate gorgonzola sauce, $17).

Everything was amazingly delicious, including the complimentary bread that came with a blend of finely chopped olives and olive oil. Service too was excellent.

Also on the lunch and dinner menus are tempting delights from amazing antipasti to scrumptious pastas to satisfying main courses to luscious desserts, including but not limited to antipasto, calamari fritti, prosciutto di parma, stracciatella, linguine di mare, spaghetti alle vongole veraci, gluten-free quinoa pasta, penne ciociara, salmone alla livornese, tagliata di manzo, vitello al limone, tiramisu, zabalione and crème caramel.

Dining room at La Piazza Dario

The dining room at La Piazza Dario is a key ingredient in making an art out of life.

So I can tell you, we felt the Italian magic! And we were just there for lunch. Guys take note, during the dinner hour, the candle light comes out and the romantic-meter, well … off the charts. And for larger groups, La Piazza Dario can help you celebrate your birthday party, anniversary dinner or wedding reception with a variety of group menus to satisfy all your guests.

So my friends, for a slice of heaven the Italian way, it’s La Piazza Dario. Bon appetite.
