“No mango salad today,” said Lek. “The mangoes are too ripe.”

Seeing my pained expression, she told me that she’ll make papaya salad instead next week, as customers have been asking for it.

I’ve been hooked on Miss Siam’s fresh green mango salad ever since I saw a line-up in front of the food truck one day while walking to a nearby appointment. Because of my high cholesterol, I eat more salads, and this one is a refreshing change from the usual lettuce ones I make. I also suspect, like green papaya, that green mango is full of enzymes that help digestion.

Lek, the friendly chef-owner, recalls growing up in the countryside in southern Thailand always eating fresh fruits and vegetables. Hence the mango and papaya salads as well as dishes chock full of vegetables.

It seems many of Lek’s customers work at the Broadway Tech Centre and know her by name. I mentioned to one customer, “The green curry is so delicious.” He replied, “The red one is even better.”

I’ve now tried both the green and red curries, and I can’t decide which one is better – both are amazing – as is the pad Thai. For these dishes, you can choose your own protein such as chicken, prawns or tofu.

Another customer recommended the chicken basil stirfry, made with ground chicken. “It’s very good,” she said, adding, “I’m addicted to it, actually.” Her friend agreed.

The walk down and up the hill to Miss Siam is well worth the effort and makes a welcome break from the home office.

On a recent Friday, I also noticed the Thai Box on Truck at the same location and made a mental note to check this out.

Yummy Slice Pizza has been open in Renfrew-Collingwood for one year now, as of June 1, 2022. They have seven locations across Vancouver and Richmond that were previously named Fresh Slice, but they rebranded all these locations overnight.

This joint is available on UberEats, SkipTheDishes and DoorDash, and they also have their own delivery vehicle. I would highly recommend picking up or calling the store directly for delivery to ensure that all proceeds go to directly our local Yummy Slice Pizza.

I had the opportunity to try their delicious pizza last month when they invited me to promote their one-year anniversary deal. As a celebration, all their locations offered any eight extra-large slices for only $11.99.

It was the perfect occasion for me to try new pizza flavours since I am the type to always get the Hawaiian (I still ordered a few slices of their Hawaiian and it was definitely my favourite).

The Hawaiian is sure to be a favourite.

Though their celebration is over, I would support this local business by grabbing a quick bite while satisfying all our pizza cravings. With so many businesses popping up in RC, it’s the perfect place to grab an inexpensive team lunch.

Other than Hawaiian pizza, I also enjoyed the Pesto Chicken and Yummy Meat pizzas. My foodie adventures have led me to enjoying pesto in all my dishes, which I previously never ordered.

The next time I have a family gathering, I will definitely order from Yummy Slice so we can all try a variety of new pizza flavours! From my experience, it’s always fun to do a blind taste test – just make sure no one has allergies before doing this.

Gong Cha, the bubble tea chain, originated from Taiwan back in 2006 and has become a globally known chain since then, according to their website. There are many locations across Canada and the Lower Mainland, including one in our very own Renfrew-Collingwood, near the Renfrew SkyTrain station.

Our branch recently acquired a new ice cream machine, and their team was gracious enough to invite several foodies to try out their new flavours. There are four flavours in total: matcha, Earl Grey milk tea, oreo and vanilla – but only two flavours are offered per day.

I got to try matcha and Earl Grey milk tea, both delicious but catered to different palettes. My preference would be the matcha ice cream as it reminded me of a matcha mochi ice cream I’d eat as a child and used to be sold at T&T supermarket. That nostalgic feeling paired with their delicious bubble waffle definitely puts them near the top of my list of bubble tea chains I’d visit again, especially in the summer.

My fellow foodie friends thought the matcha ice cream was quite sweet and preferred the Earl Grey. It had a well-rounded flavour and I would definitely recommend it to all the tea lovers out there.

The brown sugar oolong milk tea is served both hot and cold, both equally tasty depending on how you are feeling in the day. I usually order cold bubble tea in the summer and hot bubble tea in the winter, which can be comparable to ordering steeped tea from Tim Hortons or milk teas at Hong Kong cafes.

Gong Cha chains typically make drinks that are on the sweeter side and I tend to request 30% to 50% sugar instead of their regular sweetness.

The next time I visit Gong Cha Renfrew, I would be interested in trying their flavoured bubble waffles because I only had the original one during this visit.
