A convenient on-the-go Mexican restaurant opened their doors back in May 2021 within the RC neighbourhood. Border Burrito is located on the same block as Kimu Japanese Cuisine and Masala Meats. They are available for delivery on UberEats and DoorDash, but if you’re ordering for pick-up, I would highly recommend ordering directly from their website.

Border Burrito operates as a micro-restaurant with a simple menu focusing on quality, affordability and convenience. I ordered my meal through their website, easily toggling between protein options for burritos, tacos and quesadillas.

Something unique about Border Burrito is that there is no cashier inside their micro-restaurant. Upon entry there is a kiosk where you order on your own and pay with card.

Owner Sheila Aviles recommends trying their burrito – a customer favourite. I got to try their beef birria burrito plate, chicken tinga tacos, chicken tinga quesadilla, and homemade chips and salsa with a side of guacamole. My favourite was the quesadilla as it was perfectly cooked with melted cheese and a flavour that melts into your mouth.

Border Burrito has a lively vibe with music playing outside and a standing table set up for hungry customers to dine as soon as their orders are ready. It is tailored for convenient pick-up at dinner time but stay tuned on both Instagram and Google as they extend their operating hours.

Gong Cha, the bubble tea chain, originated from Taiwan back in 2006 and has become a globally known chain since then, according to their website. There are many locations across Canada and the Lower Mainland, including one in our very own Renfrew-Collingwood, near the Renfrew SkyTrain station.

Our branch recently acquired a new ice cream machine, and their team was gracious enough to invite several foodies to try out their new flavours. There are four flavours in total: matcha, Earl Grey milk tea, oreo and vanilla – but only two flavours are offered per day.

I got to try matcha and Earl Grey milk tea, both delicious but catered to different palettes. My preference would be the matcha ice cream as it reminded me of a matcha mochi ice cream I’d eat as a child and used to be sold at T&T supermarket. That nostalgic feeling paired with their delicious bubble waffle definitely puts them near the top of my list of bubble tea chains I’d visit again, especially in the summer.

My fellow foodie friends thought the matcha ice cream was quite sweet and preferred the Earl Grey. It had a well-rounded flavour and I would definitely recommend it to all the tea lovers out there.

The brown sugar oolong milk tea is served both hot and cold, both equally tasty depending on how you are feeling in the day. I usually order cold bubble tea in the summer and hot bubble tea in the winter, which can be comparable to ordering steeped tea from Tim Hortons or milk teas at Hong Kong cafes.

Gong Cha chains typically make drinks that are on the sweeter side and I tend to request 30% to 50% sugar instead of their regular sweetness.

The next time I visit Gong Cha Renfrew, I would be interested in trying their flavoured bubble waffles because I only had the original one during this visit.

Eating Out in RC: Fighter Chicken

Fighter Chicken opened their East Broadway location in April 2021, following their South Granville location. I was recently invited to try their food as part of an Instagram campaign.

For those of you who want to stay home, they are available to order on UberEats, SkipTheDishes and DoorDash. For the rest of us who either love the trek or do not want to pay extra fees, there is free parking within the plaza and the joint is a six-minute walk from Renfrew Skytrain Station.

If you are looking for a local fried chicken joint, Fighter Chicken might just be the place for you! Their crispy chicken burgers are huge; I struggled to hold it with just one hand.

Do not fret about unnaturally large chicken sizes though, because the chicken burger actually contains two pieces of fried chicken. In the two- and four-piece orders of fried chicken, I liked how it either came as a drumstick or as boneless thighs since these cuts are less messy to eat.

Also on the menu are fish burgers, fries and combos.

Overall, I recommend this fried chicken joint to support local eateries.
